You are only 2.25 miles from the northern most runway which has been around for 35+ years. Jets have become more frequent but much quieter in that same time period. With the rain storms that are moving through the area, departure routes are temporarily changed to alternative (but also authorized/approved) routing to allow for SAFE travel for all that are involved all while a reduction in arrival/departure frequency takes place. It may also be that an aircraft was unsafe to land and required a Go Around turning due north. I am sure if you were on a flight you wouldn't want your flight crew penetrating directly through a severe (or even moderate) thunderstorm nor would you want to be severely delay by hours while all the storms pass through (although sometimes they are severe enough to completely stop all traffic.) Not intending for this message to be rude, just convey some facts.
